It starts in youth leagues. Batters are required to wear a full cage OR a C flap. (What you are talking about) The true players opt for a C flap because it offers some protection with minimal view obstruction. If you learn to hhits a child with one from a young age it just becomes part of your natural attire.

I was in the batters box in H.S. when the batter got hit on the cheekbone with a fastball. POP! I will never forget the sound
