Good question by the OP, but this is pretty much what I was going to say. I think he wanted to humiliate him at first but when Andrew basically said frick you and started bringing out his greatness when he found out what Fletcher was doing, Fletcher just kind of said screw it and went along with helping him shine, which was what he always said he wanted to do.
This truly is one of my favorite movies though. One of the few I've ever seen that's absolutely perfect beginning to end.

I always thought this was very clear.
The closeup of the eyes at the end tells the story.
