4 rec for 92 yards and a td...already southern miss's leading receiver.

how would he have been able to cope with classes at LSU, he would have been on probation at one point or another.

But yes he will be a beast.

I really wanted D. Brown but the qualifying thing is a real concern. You tend not to be able to depend on them. But I admit I still wanted him badly. Plenty of great LSU players have had grade issues and have turned it around. If he can keep his grades up and stay on the field the kid will have a stellar career.

Agreed.

Brown wouldn't have seen the field for two years at LSU. He was smart (ironic) going to USM.

I was at the USM game. He lined up wide with a corner on him with no safety help. The safety had to help with the run defense. They were running the ball down ulala's throat, so they really didn't throw the ball alot. Brown made one good catch, ran the wrong route a couple of times, but looked to be one of the better athletes on the field. IMO he would be just another receiver at LSU with potential to start later.

Couldn't make his grades to get in except Southern made an exeption....

I completely disagree.
He would have definitely seen the field next year with Byrd's departure and possibly Lafell (doubtful him leaving at best).
Deangelo Peterson will see some PT this year as a true freshman, so what would stop Deandre Brown? We would all consider Brown a better talent than Peterson (although Peterson will be a stud in his own right), so I do not think we would be jumping to conclusions thinking DB would have seen some PT his freshman year and a good bit of PT his SO year.
-------------
I do agree with you though Cajun...USM was a good choice for DB because it will put him in the spotlight from day 1.

It was thought he would be a partial qualifier, but he somehow managed to be a full qualifier.

wrong. If you qualify at one school you qualify at any school, because you qualify according to the NCAA not each individual school or conference. Some schools just choose not to take minimum qualifiers (Duke, ND, Stanford). LSU is not one of those schools.
And don't bring up the invalid Phil Loadholt argument. The rules are different coming from a JuCo. He needed certain core classes to meet SEC requirements that the Big XII doesn't have.
Just accept the fact that Southern Miss beat us for a recruit because they could offer immediate playing time and we couldnt guarantee it. His academics didn't have anything to do with us not getting him. Tony Hughes did.

i think this goes for HS students as well

I should have differentiated. Yes high schoolers need core classes, more now than they used to.
I meant the certain amount of Gen Ed College courses that he didnt have that the SEC requires. I think the rule will help SEC schools with the APR since member schools cant take guys who are way behind on degree progress coming from JuCo.
But for high school there are no conference by conference requirements.

Perhaps he didn't meet LSU requirements for enrollment? Or are they different requirements for athletes? I started in 1984 and the very next year (1985) they changed the core requirements. I wouldn't have been able to go to LSU had I tried to in 1985 because I didn't take any foreign language in HS.

Athletes have different requirements. They have to fulfill SEC requirements to play sports...LSU would never enforce their academic standards on the athletes...as much of the team would never qualify (sorry to say, but it is true).
Each conference has slightly different standards...some lower than others. Phil Loadholt is the prime example of this policy.
