The fact that someone smart can’t outsmart these dickheads into power is really concerning. I’m not interested in power at all, but surely I should be able to con my way into power with these idiots in charge. Someone of moral fiber has an obligation to do this, and may as well be any of us.

Exactly. Amid the utter lunacy of this entire situation, this is what sticks out most.
Look, there are lots of things you can say in order to voice concern in a measured way. But the last thing you want ANY leader in ANY capacity to say is "I'm scared."
Well done, dumbass. I'm sure all the people who are already irrationally upset with this whole situation are taking comfort in the fact that the head of the CDC is telling the world that they're scared.
This is leadership 101 shite. Could you imagine a HS football captain telling the team at halftime that he's scared?

The harsh reality is that the scientists that wind up in government labs like CDC and NIH intramural are those that weren't competitive in pharma, biotech, or academic medicine. This has always been the stigma for these people. And it wasn't just pulled out of thin air. They earned that reputation.
