I thought the consensus was Saving Private Ryan?

ETA: Does anyone here have immediate family with a Distinguished Service Cross or Medal of Honor

I have heard the same about Saving Private Ryan but just curious about what combat veterans on the board think.

Great grandpa was awarded the Medal of Honor in WWII. My great uncle was awarded the Silver Star for his actions in Vietnam.

Grandfather: Navy Cross from WWII Pacific Theater
Father: Purple Heart from Vietnam

Neither of them really watched war movies, but both have been deceased for 10 years. They weren't "bothered," per say that I noticed though my dad did have pTSD so maybe he just avoided it and I didn't realize.

My Uncle was retired Colonel in the Army. Master Army Aviator. DSC, Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver Star, Multiple Bronze Stars. 3 Purple Hearts. Infantry in Korea. 3 Tours in Viet Nam. His last tour he flew dust off. Shot down multiple times. Never talked about it around us when growing up. After I had been thru the ringer, he opened up and talked me often last couple of years of his life. He was a hardass, Army through and through. RIP Uncle B, I miss you!

My Dad was an Air Force pilot and got the Distinguished Flying Cross along with other medals from his tour in Vietnam. As far as movies go, he never watched anything that was set after WWII.

My dad and a younger brother served in WWII on destroyers in the South Pacific. Dad was haunted by the sinking of a Japanese troop ship by his ship USS Dunlap. Thousands of people in the water and they drove through them to capture the captain and ship’s officers. He could still see and hear that carnage 20 years later. Only talked of it once. Never again and I never forgot it.
Dad’s other brother was at DDay in a tank. He was a platoon commander and actually was awarded both a Bronze Star and Silver Star. The Silver Star came when he ordered his tank stopped between a German MG and a couple of wounded GIs. He exited the tank and threw the guys on the tank and saved them. Can’t remember the Reason for the Bronze Star.
Grew up around those guys and others. Miss them immensely.
