Pain in the fricking arse. Last thing I want to do when in mud is get out of the truck and get all muddy trying to lock them in.

I don't think you ever really have to unlock them, but doing so when in 2wd will save some gas and wear & tear because the front wheels won't be turning the front axles, differential, and drive shaft for no reason.
