Newer 4x4s don’t have this anymore it’s all push button

Pain in the fricking arse. Last thing I want to do when in mud is get out of the truck and get all muddy trying to lock them in.

The locks on the hubs lock the wheel to the axle. Locked means the axles and wheels turn together, unlocked means the wheels spin freely. I don't think you ever really have to unlock them, but doing so when in 2wd will save some gas and wear & tear because the front wheels won't be turning the front axles, differential, and drive shaft for no reason.
