SAC headquarters...lived just off base ...we knew there was no where to run....

Offutt AFB in Nebraska was SAC HQ. Barksdale is (or was) the HQ of the Mighty 8th Air Force.

Yep. We also knew about the first Gulf War roughly 18 or so hours before the first bombs dropped. No sound like the drone of those bombers getting airborne. It went on for hours.
Course that wasn't quite enough---spend my last 3 years of High School in Wiesbaden, Germany which was the main Air Base/Airport sending in supplies during the Berlin Airlift.
