The question is honestly between Williams and Hendrickson.
No it's not. Williams they are going to try and lock up long term. Hendrickson is gone. Lattimore should be traded. I'll stand on that hill.

On older players you will screw yourself into dead money on, yes it is.
the cap is going to go up so much that either we won't need to cut guys for cap reasons (so dead money never comes up) or we can literally cut everyone and their dead money will be absorbed by the jump. then we'd have like $100M in cap room the next year or some crazy shite
this is the ideal time to kick as much cap equity down the road a few years because each cap dollar is worth a whole hell of a lot more today than it will be in 2022 and onward

I agree
Once the TV contracts are announced the Saints should convert every core players base salary into a signing bonus. Would clear up a lot of cap space this year to go get Wilson or Watson.
In two or three years the cap will be close to $250 mil. At that point Watson’s 40 mil. Will look like a steal.

100% agree.
Williams has gotten better every year.
Lattimore doesn't deserve top money for both his inconsistent play and also starting the season out of shape.
Hendrickson...he's earned it and I'm happy for him, but all the signs are pointing toward his being a free agent bust for some team.

Hendrickson had a breakout year, but the numbers tell us that paying him 15ml+ to be our future anchor is seriously stupid
Incredibly stupid. He doesn't stop the run good enough to start, & he probably never will. Let someone else pay him that much money just to rush the passer, & take the 3rd round comp pick for him.
Marcus Williams is the guy to keep if you had to choose between the 2, & it's a blatantly easy decision imo. Marcus Williams is an ascending player that never comes out of the game. He'll probably be cheaper than Hendrickson as well.

I know you don’t want them to extend Lattimore but it’s very likely. They can extend him and push his cap hit, which I think is around $9mil? into later years and make him play at like $4mil this year.
I know he’s been inconsistent but he’s still by far the best corner we’ve had in years here. And considering how hard it’s been for us to develop and keep good defensive backs, Williams and Lattimore become important pieces whereas guys like Hendrickson become expendable because that’s a position, at least while Nielsen is here, we can develop consistently good players at.
I think both Latt and Ram get extended to lock them up and push their cap hits down the road.
ETA: the only player that worries me as far as kicking the cap can down the road is Jordan. I hope last year was an anomaly and he proves his worth again but man he looked rough a lot. Having him eating up so much dead money would make it hard to let him go even with the cap jump. Plus he’s going to be an important locker room piece for the new generation.

I would keep Lattimore over Williams. Safety is one of the easier positions in the nfl to fill. Cornerback is one of the hardest. It is probably second to only qb. Top safeties slide to the second round often and it has been shown that good safeties can be drafted in second round or later. Your top corners typically all go top 20. You can even find good safeties for a fair price in free agency

I'm hoping we can somehow keep Lattimore, Ramczyk, & re-sign Marcus Williams.
I think that's why we're trying to trade players like Emmanuel Sanders, Latavius Murray, & Malcom Brown. I love these 3 players, but when you're in cap hell...you have to get create space while keeping your younger players on the roster. They're in the future plans...not the old guys. They probably feel like Armstead, Cam Jordan, & Janoris Jenkins are the old guys to gamble on due to the fact that we can't easily replace them.
Emmanuel Sanders & Latavius Murray aren't in our future plans due to their age & position. They should be looked at as more of a luxury compared to the younger players. We also have capable backups at the WR & RB positions as well.
Malcom Brown is trade bait b/c he makes a decent amount of money for a run stuffing DT. We have Shy Tuttle under contract & you can usually find a run stuffing DT for pretty cheap in F.A. or mid rounds of the draft (we got Tyeler Davison in the 5th round).

According to Spotrac...I was wrong when I said this. It still doesn't change my opinion on Marcus Williams > Hendrickson though.
Marcus Williams Calculated Market Value - 13.5 mil Average Annual Salary
Trey Hendrickson Calculated Market Value - 10.3 mil Average Annual Salary
Here are some other players of ours that I saw on Spotrac
-Armstead's Calculated Market Value - 24.0 mil Average Annual Salary
-Ramczyk's Calculated Market Value - 15.7 mil Average Annual Salary
-Lattimore's Calculated Market Value - 15.4 mil Average Annual Salary
-Rankin's Calculated Market Value - 11.4 mil Average Annual Salary
