I know some people have done these on here. Few questions. Where do you get the cards for the case breaks? Is it possible to make a profit? How much are just okay cases to how much are really good ones. Etc. Thinking about getting into this. Tia

There’s a guy who will open cases and boxes online. You will-prepurchase every card of a specific team or player. If you get garbage cards for that team, you probably lose lots of money. If you hit with a nice auto or something, you may profit.

It’s not as much of a money maker as people think. If you are a hobbyist it kinda could help you make you coin.

It’s ordering sports cards online at 2 a.m. on Sports at Home with Don West circa 2000 but with a modern feel.

You lose money either way to some huckster.

I’m a casual collector and it’s almost ruining the hobby for me. You can’t even find a retail box at WalMart or Target these days. People will stalk the shelf stockers (pun intended) and buy every pack and box within minutes.

They take the retail boxes and do breaks, and it’s well known they don’t have hits as great as a hobby box.

A bunch of nerds are driving up the price of a useless commodity. It will crash soon enough

Kinda like the game stop thing

No one really collects cards, they are just perceived to have value so prospectors are involved further driving up the price

99% of the cards are useless. It's that 1% that can be treasure. Sometimes it's the holographic foil Lebron James 1 in 100,000 card. Sometimes it's a Tom Brady Rookie Card you tossed into your junk bin because what chance is a QB drafted that late ever going to be at ever becoming anything.

Base cards will always be worthless. Maybe each year brings you a good rookie, but even then you need to sell fast.

Autographs are the only ones worth anything other than that.

You need to have a shop to get straight from factory.

If not, buy from a shop.

No the hobby is the healthiest I've seen in 10-15yrs.

Not just value, but the number of ppl at shows.

Bro, got find a card shop in your area and get some hobby packs. You're throwing away money buying retail stuff.

Are you talking about hosting the break or buying into a break?

I would never want to host but I’ll buy into breaks occasionally after a few drinks on a Friday night. It’s essentially gambling but it’s been paying off for me.

I had the Vikings in a random team case break of Limited last night. Hit the jackpot with a Justin Jefferson RPA /23 and a Randy Moss on card auto /10, definitely made my money back and then some but just as easily could’ve gotten absolutely nothing back.

Also on card autos.

My big rookies, If I can afford, I invest in only on card.

Some stickers, fine.. but give me on-card over all.

I rather 1 good on card than 3-5 sticker autos of that rookie.

Do you like gambling with odds that are worse than playing a slot machine?

Do you like paying a lot for garbage cards 9 out of 10 times?

That’s a case break for you. Every once in a while you hit and get something decent, but most of the time you get garbage and overpay for it.

If you’re into for the money, take that money and put it into a solid performing ETF or low cost mutual fund. When the sports card market dies again, you’ll thank me.

If you’re into cards for the hobby, just go buy the cards you want on eBay or through a reputable shop. If you like the excitement of opening them, but your own cases or packs, you’ll pay more, but the odds of a hit are much higher.

Im selling everything. This PSA and Beckett price hike is sending shock waves throughout the community. This is going to come close to killing the hobby for a couple of years.

The graded stuff, will agree, is killing the hobby.

You can turn a non-graded 40 dollar rookie base into a 400 dollar card.

I was never a huge fan of everything graded.

Singles are retarded in ebay atm.

I used to chase rookies, but now only collect my teams and a few players.

Never chase hot cards, you will always end up buying high and selling low.

Prices were getting too damn high. Dumb shite was going for over 1K. I understand what PSA and Beckett did, but the increase was beyond market correcting. I know PSA has 1 million to grade, but do they really think they are going to get anything other than a dealer to pay those prices?

The inflated hobby box prices will come crashing down now that you cant get a base Zion/Burrow/Tatis and grade it as a 10 and make 4 times the cost of the box. Base cards, parallels, and numbered cards are going to crash. All that will be left will be autos....kinda like it should be...but there is going to be a lot of market correcting in the next 6 months and Im going to get what I can while I can get it.
