It's a parent choice to a large degree.
Some parents buy kids shite.
Some parents look for every option to advance their kids knowledge. My wife picks up educational material when we are out. Not crap. They wanted cookies and ice cream..she bought a $5 DVD of the magic school bus. We eat enough junk throughout the week anyway.
At night the kids and I love to watch This Old House or Ask This Old house. All the kids love watching/learning things that promote learning.
Last night shopping they all asked for models or something to build. Just engaging and talking and teaching your kids helps. It's cumulative.

You sound like a blast.
Our 16 year old son has never made a B, runs CC at the high school, has a job, is dual enrolled at the local college AND has a pretty and smart girlfriend. Life is about balance. Make sure your kids have some social skills, too. As an employer, lack of social skill is the number one challenge finding customer-facing employees.
