For full disclosure, I didn't have any kids in the system. I'm just going by the interactions I had with teachers and the parents/spouses of my Soldiers while in command.

Maybe it was just our little slice of Germany that was....lacking.

Nice. I’ve been there many times. Mostly to go to the castle.

ETA

The once famous poster LSU Rocks went to Heidelberg.

Nice. Spent 18 months there at USAREUR G6. Loved my apartment in Leimen. I could walk out my door, turn the corner, get on the Strassenbahn, head to the Altstadt, get hammered, and ride the Strassenbahn back to my apartment.

That was one hell of a good 18 months.

You ever go to burning of the castle? Pretty cool visual and good times.

My prom was in the castle. And we threw some hell-ascious parties at the Arches (the ones to the left of the castle), last I saw, they had that blocked off from public access and a goat farmer had his goats up there. But back in the 80's, there were many a drunk highschoolers tumbling down that hill. (not my proudest of moments )

You just described my high school years.

Leimen
I was there when Boris Becker won Wimbeldon the first 2 times. Leimen threw that young dude a huge party. And the Leimen pool was the place to go back then. Lots of "positive international relations" were made back then at the pool.

I would say "ya, it's different though...you were treated like a kid with no real responsibilities", but I was at G6 as a CPT....so I was pretty much treated like a kid with no real responsibilities.

Like I said, that was probably my best 18 months in the Army. Living in Heidelberg, tons of TDY, easy job.

Then I took command and got kicked in the nuts.

I went to a rear detachment when I PCS'd to Germany in 04. It was just total chaos with no accountability so I just took two months off. I was downtown with a full beard drinking hefeweizen without a care in the world every day and no one noticed I was gone.

Not sure what that says about me.
