I'll be storing mower, utv, kid toys etc.
Would gravel be enough or should I bite the bullet and concrete said area?

If you can swing the costs, concrete all day.

I put 12x12 cement stepping blocks on the ground. May want to use some type plastic underneath if your concerned about weeds, etc. Stored mower, crawfish pots, and other items. Worked well for me and was very cost effective

You put down some good 610 limestone or crushed concrete wet it really well then pack it. Would be really solid perfect for parking on.

I have both, concrete for any cooking, gathering, high traffic areas; compacted gravel is fine for boat, utv, lawnmower storage. Of course if Baller, concrete everything.

I have shite tons of concrete in my backyard from previous owners. Installed probably 1970s/80s. The cracking and unevenness of it is becoming a thorn in my side. The more it settles/cracks, the faster it settles and cracks, especially with the monsoon rainstorms we been getting the last few years.
Whenever I get around to demolishing it, I will probably replace most with fill/sod and then have a professional replace walking, storage areas with pavers. They'll have issues too, but repair is a lot easier.
TLDR: frick concrete if you live in South Louisiana with its soft soil and heavy rain.
