China Threatens To Hobble US Defense Industry By Limiting Export Of Rare-Earth Metals

Before being voted out of office, President Trump and his administration sought to take steps that might help the US limit China's resource dominance in this area, including signing an executive order declaring a "national emergency" in the US mining and minerals industry (much of which remains focused on digging coal out of the ground). China has been widely acknowledged as dominant in the rare-earth minerals market for decades.
But with Trump out, and a much more China-friendly administration back in power in Washington, it looks like Beijing is already considering playing hardball to get what it wants.
China has been quietly exploring the economic damage it could inflict to US and European companies - including defense contractors - if they were to impose export 'restrictions' on 17 rare-earth materials, according to a report in the Financial Times.
Notably, the US government relies on these rare earths for the manufacture of F-35 jets and other sophisticated weaponry, which use them for critical components such as electrical power systems and magnets.
"The government wants to know if the US may have trouble making F-35 fighter jets if China imposes an export ban," said one Chinese government adviser who spoke on condition of anonymity.
One rare earth metal for example, samarium cobalt, is used in precision guided missiles and fighter jets, and advanced communications systems.

Why do we rely on them anyway? Is China the only place to mine these things?

Russia and Africa have a lot of rare earth metals, but the CHinese already locked down Africa.

Greenland.
Trump was laughed at for talking about making a play for it.
frick these small minded clowns. They'll be the ruin of us.

This should be a wakeup call. But I doubt that President* Sleepy Joe will even stir.

The lack of critical thinking of the big picture by so many is disappointing.
They are so caught up with the little squabbles of life they fail to see the forest for the trees.
If I do anything I hope my children learn to look past the end of their nose.
All these years of my nose in history books as a hobby has formed my outward thinking. Not sure if I am happier or saddened by it.
Ignorance is bliss they say.

Seems like we should start mining our dump sites for all types of resources, including rare earth metals.

China is playing the long game and our government (with the exception of Trump) is too stupid to see it.
High tech systems and vehicles are nothing without the raw materials to produce them.
Not to mention the additional stranglehold for chemical and oil and gas companies.
China is globetrotting buying up resources while we sit here and twiddle our thumbs. As a previous poster states Africa is locked up for China.
Im not sure what our interests In South America are but there is tons of mining activity there also.

I will give you a hint this is part of the plan he is not on the side of Americans

Bc the by-product and costs of mining is very high when you use adult workers and can't dump the waste into the local river.
So, the users of the material went to the cheaper supplier, other suppliers folded, and now China has us over a barrel.

we fricked up in the early 2000s, especially with Obama in the white house because that's when the Chinese made their big moves in Africa to lock the shite up

Hillary sold our uranium to Russia
Uranium > lithium
Uranium > lithium

We should probably look outside of Mississippi and Arkansas as well.

China has displaced indigenous African families because they now own their homelands, in order to facilitate the mining and removal of precious minerals.

IIRC, China has 3/4 of the world supply when factoring in the amount needed to be economically feasible. Myanmar was coming on line as a secondary supplier. Biden is elected and an “internal” coup occurs there.
Shockingly, I also believe that most of the mines in Australia are actually owned by China. In short, our supply of these elements basically went to zip. These elements are also quite important for most tech devices. As such, it gives China major sway over the tech oligarchs. The attacks on conservatives may also have a financial side as it relates to pressure from outside entities (CCP?).
On another note. the old Mountain Pass mine once owned by Molycorp was purchased last summer. It holds most of our nation’s known rare earth concentration. The downside is that it is California. I said years ago in this site that the Pentagon should have bought the mind as a sourcing option. Hopefully they have contracts signed with MP (the new owners).
From Reuters in July:
quote:
The deal, announced on Wednesday, comes as President Donald Trump pushes to resume domestic production and processing of rare earths, a group of 17 minerals used to build weapons and electronics. China is the world’s largest producer of these minerals and has threatened to stop their export to the United States. Reviving domestic rare earths production has become a priority in Washington as relations with China have become increasingly frayed and U.S. lawmakers warn of the dangers of relying on a competitor for critical defense components.

Trump signed an executive order to address this in the fall of last year.
We have much of what we need here in the US, but evironmental regs, pricing in china, ran most of the companies out of business. Its still there if we want to dig.
I believe Japan found the motherlode of rare earths offshore a year or two ago as well.

I believe this is the case as well. However, weren’t the islands in question disputed? My memory is hazy on this.
ETA - all a Japan big in the seabed. Obviously extraction may be an issue.
From the CNBC article:
quote:
Rare-earth metals are crucial in the making of high-tech products such as electric vehicles, mobile phones and batteries, and the world has relied on China for almost all of its rare-earth material. The seabed contains more than 16 million tons of rare-earth oxides, according to the study. That’s equivalent to 780 years’ worth of yttrium supply, 620 years of europium, 420 years of terbium and 730 years of dysprosium, it added. The discovery “has the potential to supply these metals on a semi-infinite basis to the world,” the study said.
