Great John Kennedy statement on vote to acquit former President Donald Trump

WASHINGTON—Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) released the following statement upon voting “not guilty” in the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump:
“My job as a senator and juror in an impeachment trial is not—NOT—to defend, excuse or explain anyone’s behavior—not the Capitol rioters’, not the Democrats’, not the president’s. My job is to evaluate the evidence.
“In my judgment, impeachment is not supposed to be political sport where one party seeks advantage over the other at the expense of the country.
“The merits of the Democrats’ case were not even close.
“The Democrats afforded the president no due process in the House—no hearings, no investigation, no right to be heard, no defense. No one is above the law, but no one is beneath it.
“Second, the president is no longer the president. We were asked to impeach a guy in Florida. The Democrats never proved jurisdiction.
“Third, the Democrats charged President Trump with inciting a riot through his speech, but then the Democrats introduced evidence that the riot was pre-planned. The Democrats disproved their own case.
“There are one or two things I think we can all agree on: The nut jobs who violated the Capitol on Jan. 6 should be prosecuted and jailed. There can be no justice without order. Political violence is wrong. Always. It was wrong on Jan. 6, and it was wrong during the riots this summer.
“Finally, both parties should be big tents, but those big tents should each have a big door to kick out extremists who exist on both sides.”
All I'll say about Bill Cassidy right now is that as far as Louisiana politicians go, what Bill Cassidy did today in voting to convict the most effective GOP POTUS since Ronald Reagan in Donald Trump is enough for me to consider him in the same breath as the RINO turncoats like Scott Angelle and Jay Dardenne that helped install John Bel Edwards in the Governor's mansion not once but twice.
Voting to convict the most effective GOP POTUS since Ronald Reagan in Donald Trump or voting for hardcore leftist control freak John Bel Edwards, it's all the same to me.
Granted, 6 year is a very long time and who knows what the political landscape looks like in 2026 but I have to say that Cassidy would serve himself and Louisiana very well by declining to seek a third in 2026 and bow out of the Louisiana political scene so we can avoid a GOP civil war over his candidacy and elect a conservative that can win with ease by comfortable margins.
Bill Cassidy is a nice guy and I'm sure he means well and is sincere about his beliefs but he showed he's a peacetime conservative today and we need wartime conservatives because our way of life is under siege from the globalist political class

I always liked John Kennedy
I liked Cassidy too until he fricking betrayed us and sold out to the swamp

Kennedy has common sense.
But not enough to understand that he would've beaten JBE to a bloody pulp and save us from that liberal charlatan who has been an a-hole tyrant to Louisiana and the working class and middle class here just trying to earn a living and provide for themselves and their families.
If an upstart novice like Eddie Rispone who was doing everything he could do to lose can come within two points of unseating an incumbent Governor, Kennedy would've made short work of JBE.
The fact that Kennedy passed on it after waiting so long to announce it will always leave me with some animus towards him.

This right here should’ve stopped the proceeding before it started.

Don't get me wrong, I believe that Cassidy is a nice guy and he's sincere about his beliefs but he's a peacetime conservative and that's not what we need right now.
We need wartime conservatives and Cassidy is not that guy.
I saw his vote to convict and I was like ok then, bye, looks like I'm voting for someone else then.
I wasn't even mad about the vote to convict and didn't get all red faced about it, it just clarified what I need to do in 2026.

Except he isn’t “some guy in Florida.”
He still will be drawing $219,000 a year in pension (unless he keeps donating it - which he should, he doesn’t need our money). He still will get secret service protection for himself and his family. He still has all the benefits of being “former president.”
Convicting him would strip all of that away. I personally think it’s questionable if he’s “guilty” or whatever - but he isn’t “just some guy in Florida,” unless you can name other people (besides presidents, duh) still siphoning off $500,000 a year in taxpayer money.

lol, democrats just spent millions in taxpayer money on this farce of an impeachment, but otherwise - nice concern troll

Well spoken, Sent. But you are more generous to Cassidy that I am. Being "nice" and "sincere" when our Nation is being "fundamentally changed" by a ruthless gang of grifters is no place for the likes of Cassidy. If he had any real honor, he'd resign and leave the 'kitchen'. Too hot for him. And it is going to get a LOT hotter, way before the next election.

I’m not concerned about the debt at all. Idgaf if trump takes his money and run. Just pointing out he isn’t “just some guy in Florida” now.
And ps...the Rs were the ones blocking tax refund checks all during the pandemic. I certainly would’ve liked some of my money back. Cheers.

Ok so anyone drawing a federal pension can be impeached. Solid.

Thank you, Senator Kennedy, for always being a solid representative of Louisiana.
frick you, Dr. Cassidy, I will not address you by the title granted to you by the people of this state for whom you have betrayed.

the statement that he is just some guy in Florida is a goofball way of saying you can’t impeach a former president, which is a constitutional fact.
Do you have a retort for that or is this a concern troll over the federal revenue impacts on the presidential pension of a man who donated his salary throughout his tenure?

No, we do not agree on this point.
If the rioters of the summer will not be prosecuted then neither should the capitol rioters. EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW.
Where is it?
It no longer exist. Prove me wrong.

He's right.
The problem with the capital riot is that the right does not have the institutional and establishment backing to riot like they did at the Capitol.
BLM, Antifa and the left rioted for as long as they did all summer long because they have support from institutional establishment powers who saw them as their foot soldiers against a populist Presidency they're trying to remove.

I agree with this. Yes I know one riot was at the capitol but so fricking what? Numerous riots and we even saw liberals take over entire city blocks in Seattle and hardly a word of condemnation or prosecutions.
