The deal cut to not call witnesses at impeachment trial.

I think the deal was this:
We won't call witnesses and end this quickly if Mitch condemns Trumps actions and throw him under the bus in order to tarnish him as much as possible.

No, they were going to look stupid when Trump’s team called up their witnesses. But the threats of criminal action seems to be a scare tactic to keep Trump quiet.

No. I’m not sure what the Rs gave up to not have witnesses called - but it would’ve absolutely been an embarrassment.
Why does anyone have any faith in the people trump hires? Sessions, Barr, Scarramucci, Rudy, Sydney...the list goes on and on and on. Pure embarrassments - except for Barr, but he failed trump when trump needed him most.
“Only hire the BEST PEOPLE,” was a campaign promise trump absolutely did not keep.

I think he was somewhat fooled and thought he hired the best ones. I think they were secretly never-Trumpers.

It was more along the lines of:
“To get your lone witness, we will call over a hundred (per Trump’s defense counsel) and drag this out for weeks...meanwhile we confirm no one and pass no bills. Or, you can enter her testimony by reading her statement and we move to a vote.”
