Freak break in a spinning reel

I was fishing on the river trying to catch some cats 2 days ago and I got a bite on one of my lines baited with cut bait on a circle hook, so I let it play out until I felt I had it hooked before really setting the hook.
When I cranked back on the rod, the damn reel broke right where it attaches to the rod. It snapped off at the back of the reel, leaving the two prongs secured on the rod along with about 3 inches of the arm that comes up to the back of the reel. No way in hell I could reel in the fish with the reel being in the condition it was in and trying to mule in a cat by wrapping 30 lb. mono around my hand was not going to work either, so I just cut the line and my losses.
It is an Abu Garcia Black Max 60 on a Shakespear Ugly Stick rod that I've used and caught many catfish on in the past. When I got home I checked it out on-line and see it is a graphite body reel.
Needless to say, I'll not be buying another one that isn't made of metal.

I had a Shimano do the same thing. It was my favorite reel.

They torque up at the real seat and eventually break, it’s just one of the weak links of a spinning real.

Reel drag is listed at 14lbs. How tight was the drag?

It was my fault, I got snagged on the btm and was trying to break it loose. Only 15lb floro leader, with a 30lb braid main line.

Reel good chance you stood on it or dropped it at just the right/ wrong angle while handling it.

Ive learned my lesson its best to invest a little for reel quality. Diawa bg and quantum smoke are both great

I don't keep the drag tight on any of my reels and adjust as needed, so it wasn't too tight a drag.

Quantum Smokes are some nice reels. I agree

Doubt that seriously. My rods are stored upright in a corner of the man cave and when I take them to go fish the river, I place them in the bed of my pickup, not drop them.
Once on the river, I bait up and toss them out and set them up to keep an eye on them.
Then reverse order when heading home and cleaning up.
Damn reel looked brand new.

It’s a cheap reel. Sometimes stuff just breaks. I used to only fish with duckett rods until I set the hook on a bass and the rod snapped in half about midway up. I pulled the fish in by hand and it was maybe a pound. No way it should’ve snapped a rod. Just chalk that one up to the game and get you a new one.

Could have been brand new, and it’s still a $29 reel. Nothing wrong with using cheaper reels but they just aren’t gonna last, even if you take care of them. Got a milk crate full of them in the garage, and I’m not hard on stuff.

Check out the new Shimano Vanford & Ultegra......they are great reels.

Actually, it was a $50+ reel as it was the Black Max 60, but obviously still very breakable.
I will make it a point to buy nothing but metal body reels from here on out.
