I wouldn’t say that. The bulk of Yami sales are not the 425+HP.......and the reliability reputation of Yami vs Merc is still a wide margin.

Like saying Chevy has put a dagger in Toyota because they are dropping a 1000HP motor in a 1500.

Now, does this come into play with the top 1% of money people pushing Freeman’s, Invincibles, etc.? Sure. But the millions of bay boat and sub 30’ people are unaffected.

The company I work for has a boat w/ an electric outboard, its 25 hp kinda ... its on a 16 ft aluminum boat. Batteries 500 lb. Will run 2 hrs at full throttle, doesnt plane. Ya I work for an electric company and its a PR move. Cost they wont say. With the battery issue I dont see a electric outboard for a while

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the Yamaha 300 have severe problems with lower units and flywheels? I know of a charter company that keeps spare lower units in his inventory because of that (or so he says).

A 600hp V12 isn't going to help that for mercury. Thats a long crankshaft, assload of valves/bearings/etc to bust up. V12's are pretty smooth running by nature so hopefully it'll hold up. Sure to carry a ridiculous price tag and some serious maintenance costs but for the ones that must go the fastest with the biggest this will fit the bill.

It is 2021, not 1980. They are both as reliable as you will find in an outboard. The biggest difference now is that Mercury’s lowers will last more than 600 hours. I know of several large and small charter companies who keep many spare Yamaha 300 and 350 lowers. The largest company in Venice, who has switched to almost all Mercury power, has 2 spare Mercuy lowers for 24 engines. When they ran mostly Yamaha, they had 8 spare lowers for even less engines. Most of the time, all of the spares were in use.
