okay, so by that logic, shouldn't the defending #2 be the defending #2, and #3 and so on?
No, that's not the logic at all.
There is only one earned CHAMPION,
the others are rankings. I treat the national champion concept as an earned HONOR.
It is a position that no one else has.
It has nothing to do with the others...
they are not the Champion.

agreed, they are the champion from the 2007 season

same could be said about #2, and #3 and so on
if 1 team can carry their earned ranking from the previous season, then all have to
the idea is ridiculous anyway (to carry rankings from one season to next), because rationality actually makes a difference in these polls, BUT to insinuate that only last years rankings shuld carry over for 1 team and not everyone really just takes it to a new level

no they do not,
they are NOT National Champions.
There is only 1 National Champion each year and it should carry that as a fringe benefit
here is a by-product of such benefit too..
as it is now, teams like USC WHO DO NOT PLAY A CONFERENCE TITLE GAME, w/out having played what could possibly be a team of their same caliber.
If the 1 position was automatically populated from last year's champion...as soon as they loose,...
then the 1 position could have a little more
room for debate...
when was the last time that the PRESEASON poll was right anyway?

Just watch LSU go undefeated and get left out of the BCSNCG as a result of the start in the polls. Then people will change their mind.

you feel very strongly about being wrong don't you? (psst., hey don't tell anyoneone, but lose only has 1 o)

you cant have a system where only one teams ranking is based of last year. bc we are defending champs is the only reason your saying this. to ensure the returning champs dont get screwed they need to be #1.
what do you u do for the 24 other teams?

no team ever again will go undeated in the sec and be left out of the national championship.

and is returning that offense something to celebrate?
Yes, it is. In '02 we had one of the worst offenses I can remember but had a nasty defense that carried us through the season and eventually won us a championship. At one point late in the season we were THIRD TO LAST in total offense in the nation, yet still went 14-0. Our best offensive play that year was the punt, and that's no joke.

so you have 3 SEC teams to start the top 10, then 4 big 12 teams to finish the top ten...AND, you are a LSU (sec) fan living in Texas (big 12)
Exactly. Please take your blinders off. Believe it or not, in-conference teams actually play each other and somebody has to lose.

Interesting...
OOC games vs Wash St (went to Rose Bowl that year), Texas Tech and Cincy, conf wins vs Wisconsin, Purdue, Penn St and Michigan, and a win over Miami in the NCG to break their 34 game winning streak. How embarrassing!

this is why the poll isn't open to everyone IMO

Wash St.
Texas Tech
Cincinattie
Wisconsin
Purdue
Penn State
Michigan
????
Really? Which one of these teams is supposed to impress us?
The Miami win in the NCG is the only win that is worth while from that entire year. They were the best team to ever put on a uniform. That is, until Oklahoma suited up in 2003...
