Bar chords aren't really my friend so I find myself using a capo from time to time. I saw a video demo of the Glider Capo recently and was intrigued so I ordered one.

It feels like a quality product and is said to be Made in the USA.

The major selling point of this capo is the manufacturer claims you can "seamlessly change keys during songs" since the capo rolls along the neck. I suppose this would be possible with some practice but it still feels clunky to me.

Another selling point is that it stores above the neck which is really what I wanted it for. It does do that fine but is rather large and some may not like the look.

I've used some cheapo clip style capos in the past and there always seems to be some adjustments needed here and there to keep strings from buzzing and such. This capo seems to eliminate that problem, I couldn't make it buzz without putting it directly on top of a fret.

One negative would be that the spring doesn't seem to be adjustable so it would fit better or worse depending on the neck you use it on. The manufacturer claims its a universal capo and can be used on basically any type of guitar, even a 12 string.

Seems big and clunky to me. And it'd definitely get in the way of sliding my hand up to fret position one. Because I often like for my index finger to be at least equal, if not up a bit forward of capo toward the head stock, in order to use 3 lower fingers.

Which is to say I want the least possible protrusion to the g-b-e side of the neck.

I’m going to get one of these for when my vocal part is a little too high.

I don't use a capo very often, as a matter of fact I only use it for open tuning stuff and I only use it on the 1st or 2nd fret, like to change an open E tuning to an open F or F#. I've got 1 of the Kyser brand clip on ones, it works pretty well and it's U.S. Made.

Whatever capo you use, be sure ...

** it squeezes just enough to barre the strings with similar tension to your fretting finger(s). You don't want a hard squeeze death lock. Older Kysers were/are the worst for the death lock and prematurely divoting cowboy chord area frets. I cannot count how many partial fret jobs I have done to fix pinch/clip capo destruction over the years.

** the barre matches closely matches the fingerboard radius, either through its barre and/or its padding arc(s). The closer a match, the less tension needed to get solid barre contact.

I have used the same Shubb C1 capo for 25 years. It has a screw to set its squeeze torque. Simple, effective, affordable and readily available. You cannot beat it IMHO.

I'm surprised more guitar manufacturers don't produce capos specifically for their guitars

Yep, they're real nice and economical. I started with one of those then moved to a

Victor (now made by Dunlop)

and then finally to a

G7 which is really easy to set, easy to move, and real easy on the neck.

I know lot of people call them a crutch; however many an acoustic artist play with them and to get the same voicing it really helps.
