I recently got several knives sharpened and I am wondering if there is a simple rule of thumb for choosing the right knife for a given task.
TIA

well yea. chefs is an all purpose knife, then you have pairing knives, boning knives, clevers, butchers knife, etc. all serve a or multiple purposes.

Knives are specialized however, 90% of cutting tasks can be accomplished with a French (or chef) knife.

I have a full set of Wusthof Classic forged knives and I hardly use anything but the 8" Chef, 7" Santoku, & 3.5" Vegetable knives. The smaller knife has a smaller kerf for making the fine cuts in onions or making straws before dicing them with either of the larger knives.

After seeing some of the contest contributors, I'd listen to anyone but me though.
