Need to get a GPS/depth/fish finder With plotting and tracking capability. Looking at a 7" for my marsh boat.

It’s all preference. Those hummingbirds are badass though

I have two issues with Humminbird. First, I do not like the user experience. Never got comfortable moving from sonar to maps to imaging etc. Second, just looking at the Lake master cards, it doesn't appear that any of my area lakes are covered.
From my use of all 3
Ease of use: Lowrance>Garmin>Bird
Imaging:
Bird> tie to the other two
Mapping:
Lowrance>Garmin>Bird
Forward Sonar:
Tie between Garmin/Lowrance with Bird's yet to be released.
About to order a new boat, and I am really tempted to go all Garmin.

The main thing I need is tracking and depth finder. I found a lowrance on sale for cheap.

Looks like I will be getting the lowrance.

Just make sure it's not a hook

I had no issues with the one Hook I had. Would buy again if the circumstances were proper for that unit's use.

Lowrance best for your needs Hook 5 Combo is very nice very user friendly. If you can afford the 9 and have room go for it.

If you are gonna run a satellite map card I'd advice against the hook.

what about simrad? I am in the market for a new one for my boat. Will be used for coastal and reef fishing out to 30 miles. Looking hard at the Simrad Evo 9..

If I want decently updated maps of Hopedale and Dulac, will they have to be a satellite card?

the new technology is awesome...

The most glaring major difference is mapping. All other brands are using open-ended mapping softwarewhile Garmin uses proprietary mapping software. If you don’t like Garmin’s mapping choices, oh well. They had to buy Navionics in order to get some decent mapping but there is still a lot to be desired with their mapping choices. With the release of Navico (Simrad and Lowrance parent company) and Humminbird’s live sonar, we are already staring to see Garmin sales drop off. Livescope has been the only thing to keep Garmin relevant and that playing field has leveled out.
Navico products communicate best with Mercury products and Navico can also support interfaces from nearly all major outboard manufacturers. Garmin products communicate with Yamaha products and supply generic information from the others.
For the gentleman asking about Simrad; the major difference between Simrad and Lowrance is Simrad’s ability to drive larger accessories like radar, autopilot and sonar modules. Their operating system and mapping software is the same between the brands. If you don’t require Simrad then Lowrance will be the better/cheaper choice.

Mapping is why I am leaning toward keeping my Carbon 9 at the console on my new boat, but getting either a Garmin or bird for side imaging. A preview of the cards for my area show no detail on Garmin or Humminbird. My lakes are not even listed on Lakemaster.

Navigation and sonar is much better with Lowrance but the Hummingbird has better side image.

A lake topo map ain't gonna be helpful in dulac.
