Because the virus is primarily attached to those large droplets, not the aerosolized particles, which masks that have the filter do block significantly.. Things like neck gaiters are even less effective than that.
You don't wanna wear a mask? Whatever, do you. You have that freedom just as a Karen has the freedom to bitch about it. Masks reduce spread. They're not 100% effective and never have been billed as such.

Don't ignore viral load. It depends on how much virus you get and over what period of time.
If masks can reduce it--either the amount I spread, or consume--I'm good with wearing one.
