Cord on a shop-vac?

Anyone ever extended or changed out a shop-vac cord for a longer one? Assuming it's pretty straightforward.

Why not just use an extention?

Because we use it for our kitchen, dining, hallway and mudroom... due to brick floors. A longer cord would be easier than the 4ft it came with.

Don't know the wire gauge on your vac. If you're going to lengthen the cord significantly I would not go with a thinner wire because there will be greater resistance that could result in overheating for that wire.

I have done this on several tools/appliances.
First, check the cord for cable type or wire size. Or, check the info label on the Shop-Vac; should have motor amp data.
16 gauge is good for 10 amps, 14 gauge for 15 amps.
Biggest pain is removing the cord strain relief on the tool and getting back in with the new wiring.
Tip - I replaced the cord on my air compressor, and a pre-made extension cord was cheaper than the bare cable and plug. Go figure.

Lowes had 12AWG YellowJacket knock-offs on sale recently, 50' cord for $15, bought two.

Pretty simple. I’ve done this to a few items I own. All you need is a crimper and butt splices. But me being the anal person that I am I always tape over the butt splices with 130 C electrical tape and then Super 33 electrical tape. But then again I am a retired electrician

You're WAYYYY over complicating this.
Extension.
