So I was pissed after Bama and started thinking that things started to change when we hit Vandy last season. I had noticed these strange matchups and defenses Wade started using in that game, which came on the heels of a long winning streak. That’s when this decline started and it’s only gotten worse since going to a zone heavy look. We were never a Virginia level D but at least in the man to man we competed and could use our individual athleticism. Here’s the breakdown and contrast in our defensive numbers before and after Vandy 2020.

All 89 games before Vandy 2020
Record- 63-26 (71%)
Defensive FG%- 43%
3s allowed- 8.3 per game
3pt Att allowed- 24.3 per game
3pt%- 34%
FT allowed- 18.2 per game
Off Reb allowed- 10.6 per game
Total Reb allowed- 33 per game
Turnovers forced- 13.7 per game
PPG allowed- 72.8ppg

The past 2 years prior to Vandy (100% Wade’s team)
Games- 56
Record- 45-11 (80%)
Defensive FG%- 42%
3s allowed- 8.2 per game
3pt Att allowed- 24.6 per game
3pt%- 33%
FT allowed- 17.7 per game
Off Reb allowed- 10.4 per game
Total Reb allowed- 32.4 per game
Turnovers forced- 13.7 per game
PPG allowed- 71.7ppg

23 games since Vandy 2020 and defensive changes
Record- 14-9 (60.8%)
Defensive FG%- 43.5%
3s Allowed- 9.4 per game
3pt Att allowed- 28 per game
3pt%- 33%
FT allowed- 18.9 per game
Off Reb allowed- 13.2 per game
Total Reb allowed- 38.1 per game
Turnovers forced- 13.5 per game
PPG allowed- 77ppg

If they can’t learn how to switch and play in your face defense, they won’t go very far. Shooters shoot now days

We've seen and have been critical of Wade's defenses for years. It has always been an issue in some way. "Next year when we get X guys the defense will improve." Bama was hot and we were not beating them, but we could have not given them so many free uncontested shots. Not as hard to be draining three's like practice when you have 0 pressure on you. Still an impressive night for the Tide but when you're wide open, it's a lot easier to do anything. You notice how whenever we had they ball they're immediately in man to man pressuring us? They wouldn't even allow us breathing room, we just played the statistical hope they miss/rebound game. I love Wade and he's been great to us, but he really needs to figure a solid defense out.

So basically the only thing that has changed tremendously in the stats you posted is rebounding. Since LSU hasn't had a rim protector/rebounder they've lost more. It's not rocket science.

The thing that stands out to me here since the change is the uptick in rebounds allowed. Watching last night, we had trouble boxing out consistently. Not sure if they were just deflated after the big lead last night, but it was uninspiring to say the least.

Good stats, but the dialogue is slightly misrepresented in this thread. That vandy game last year was a turning point of sorts. We played mostly man to man prior to and during that game. Vandy exposed guys like watford and smart in man to man so much that night that wade said after the game the book was out on how to beat lsu defensively. After that game we started mixing some zone in with our man defense to change it up and help guys like watford and smart. We never played exclusive zone last year. Secondly, this hear we started running this matchup zone to try to alleviate the problem, but its just a defense we mix in. We still go man to man, 1-3-1 and 2-1-2. Basically wade throws everything at the wall to see what sticks. And we have played better defense this year. More games then not in SEC play we have been better. But then random games like florida and bama happen. Now, i think we will player better defense the rest of the way....except against bama, its a terrible matchup for this scheme wade tries to run. Oats’ philosophy in general is a math problem for wade’s philosophy.
