NG heaters will rust out in 2 years.
My current NG heater has lasted over 20years. I don’t expect the next one I purchase to have the same lifespan but I certainly expect it to last more than 2 years. Everything I have read about premature rusting is that it is caused by an unbalanced pool/excess chemicals. I test the water myself every couple days and my pool stays pretty balanced using the program spelled out on Troublefree pools.

A curponickel heat exchanger will last longer. Make sure you keep the pool balanced as you mentioned. If pH goes off for 6 months the heat exchanger will be shot. I see many gas heaters last 6 to 24 months due to improper water chemistry.
