Nightmare Caribbean Trip- Covid Testing Related

I’ve seen a lot of posts lately regarding international travel. I have a coworker that just went through a nightmare on a Caribbean vacation. I would not take the chance of traveling outside of the US right now.
Basically the husband and wife (both 25 years old) travelled to Barbados for a 7 day vacation during Christmas break. They were tested prior to traveling and were to receive the results the next day. They were asked to quarantine in their room until then. The next day a government official knocked on their hotel room door and notified them that the wife had tested positive and the husband tested negative. She had no symptoms. They promptly took the wife away to a designated Covid Hospital on the island. The husband was asked to be tested again and to quarantine in his room until his test comes back negative.
The wife was sent to a one room Covid facility where she was sharing the room with people on ventilators. She said it was like a prison. Pretty much everyone but her were from Barbados. At this time Barbados just saw a spike in cases and the hospital was at full capacity.
She had to remain at the hospital for 14 days! No internet and cell service was in and out. Her husband had to book an additional week at the hotel until she was released. Poor girl never saw the ocean!

Barbados is one of, if not the most strict Caribbean destinations that are welcoming tourists right now. I also wouldn’t risk it.

Yeah, if one wants to travel outside of the country they really need to do their research.

You have three days to test and get the results. Getting on a plane without a negative result is nothing more than poor timing on their part.
If you're flying out on a Saturday, get the PCR test on Thursday in case your flight is delayed/cancelled by a day.
Do not wait to test until the day before you are traveling. International or domestic just plan the testing accordingly and don't get on the plane without a negative test. Not only is it to prevent those who are positive from entering the country or state it should hopefully keep people who are positive from going to the airport then flying and exposing dozens and dozens of other people.

I mean that sucks for them, but hard to feel sorry for them if they didn't do their homework before traveling.

This was their mistake. They should never have left the U.S. without a negative COVID test in hand.
I have traveled abroad three times since COVID struck but won't be doing it again for the foreseeable future because the U.S. is requiring a negative COVID test for entry starting 1/26. No way would I risk being caught with a positive test in a foreign country.

Exactly.
There is a decision to be made on how early you want to be tested. If you decide to test three days out and your flight is cancelled for whatever reason (not a super high probability into the Caribbean right now) you have an EXCELLENT chance of having your results well before you fly.
If you schedule it two days out you are obviously increasing the chance of a delayed result but you're giving yourself more of a cushion on the other end as well.

I agree that they were naive and I’m not even attempting to go outside of the USA right now so haven’t done any research.
Do other countries require a test once you’ve arrived too, or before you leave? If so, you can end up in the same circumstances.

I can't speak for every country but I am not aware of any that require testing upon arrival. It doesnt mean they don't exist only I don't know of any. Barbados is pretty clear though and to me...they are even lucky they got to leave the airport without a negative results.
I honestly would not have thought they would not have even made it past customs and would have just been shown their way back to the ticket window.

I;m sorry to hear they had a bad experience. This really goes to show that if you want to travel out of the country in these times you have to do your due diligence which includes contacting the locale you are visiting and making sure you understand what you could be in for.

Surprised they were allowed to travel to Barbados without a negative test. Bahamas requires a negative PCR test at the departing airport prior to arriving in the country.

Croatia is a tough one. You can't have the swab go in your nose prior to 48 hours to entering the country.
So unless you find a same day PCR test (rapid tests aren't PCR), you are leaving before getting those results.

We’re trying to figure out what to do with our honey moon now with this new rule...
We both had covid a few weeks ago and still testing positive. Wondering if a doctor’s release and a positive test dating back a month plus will be good enough.
