Buddy, EVERYBODY kept slaves back in the day - if they could afford them.

The Arabs raided the Greek Islands and all the northern shores of the Mediterranean for slaves - women for their harems and men to do hard labor, including rowing the galleys.

The Nordic people took slaves all over Northern Europe, Normandy and the British Isles.

The American Indians routinely took slaves from other Indian tribes (and stole their land, committed genocide, etc)

Sub-Saharan Africans were tribal peoples who committed every atrocity the American Indians did, including slavery. In fact, the American slavery so much abhorred was stocked with slaves captured primarily by black Africans.

The Japanese enslaved Koreans and Chinese. The Chinese are CURRENTLY enslaving muslims.

What makes western civilization unique is that they GAVE UP SLAVERY VOLUNTARILY due to conscious. I had no part in any of this, but I tend to be proud of our ancestors for their part in slavery - the British for employing their navy to patrol the African West Coast to prevent slavers. The Americans for spending their treasure and their blood to free the slaves. Who else in the world did that?

Yup, it is almost statistically certain that everyone has both slaves and slave owners in their lineage.

So if we are getting reparations how do I need to get it from Rome?

Most people don't know that the word "Slav" associated with Russians, Ukrainians and southeastern European countries came from the Romans who made slaves out of the people who inhabited those countries. The Slavic people became a primary source for Roman slaves.

Right. The vast majority of civilization today was built on the backs of slaves.

Some would have you believe this is a uniquely American story. Or that the atrocities committed by American slave holders were somehow worse than any others. Which, of course, is a complete lie.

We are all slaves
Some of us have nicer enclosures than others...

Words
Meanings...
Should be obvious (would be willing to bet <1% of people know this because teacher did not teach them this and no one on the tell-a-vision has ever “corroborated” it for them)

quote:

slave (n.)

late 13c., "person who is the chattel or property of another," from Old French esclave (13c.), from Medieval Latin Sclavus "slave" (source also of Italian schiavo, French esclave, Spanish esclavo), originally "Slav" (see Slav); so used in this secondary sense because of the many Slavs sold into slavery by conquering peoples.
The oldest written history of the Slavs can be shortly summarised--myriads of slave hunts and the enthralment of entire peoples. The Slav was the most prized of human goods. With increased strength outside his marshy land of origin, hardened to the utmost against all privation, industrious, content with little, good-humoured, and cheerful, he filled the slave markets of Europe, Asia, and Africa. It must be remembered that for every Slavonic slave who reached his destination, at least ten succumbed to inhuman treatment during transport and to the heat of the climate. Indeed Ibrahim (tenth century), himself in all probability a slave dealer, says: "And the Slavs cannot travel to Lombardy on account of the heat which is fatal to them." Hence their high price.
The Arabian geographer of the ninth century tells us how the Magyars in the Pontus steppe dominated all the Slavs dwelling near them. The Magyars made raids upon the Slavs and took their prisoners along the coast to Kerkh where the Byzantines came to meet them and gave Greek brocades and such wares in exchange for the prisoners.
