Well, that's the end of the 9-to-5 fast food hustle. It's always been such a fine way to pay for a family, a Chevrolet, and a mortgage on a nice suburban split-level.

ETA: Seriously, I have no problem with a $15 minimum wage. Business groups have protested every damned new regulation from abolition to child labor laws to the Clean Water Act. When I was getting started in the workforce the ADA was going to send hamburger prices into the sky. It didn't happen then and it won't now.

what happens to the people who make 15 an hour right now? do they get fricked over, or do they get a likewise bump in pay?

what about the people who made 25 an hour. now that the people making 15 an hour got bumped up to 25 an hour, surely they arent going to do the same job for, effectively, a massive pay cut. no they need a raise as well.

but wait. theres a group above them.

and above them

etc.

etc

etc.

so. now that EVERYONE has gotten a raise, what does that do for anyone besides increase the cost of goods and services and decreasing the amount of hours worked by hourly employees?

The obvious result of a $15 / hour wage law is inflation, so yes, they get a bump in pay. It won't be immediate, but it will happen.

Inflation is not a purely bad thing. It does force wages up- wages are just one more price. And those of us who aren't independently wealthy but did pay attention in school have low-interest debt. It would be justifiable reward if inflation (and thus wage growth) outpaced that 1-2% cost of money we're paying on our houses and cars. At present, it is not.

Wage compaction, I manage a bunch of grants and had to deal with this garbage.

We boosted a bunch of "low-level" non-profit people $2 an hour, which rose them to the level of their direct managers. So we had to boost their pay as well.

2 vs 1.25 vs .75 up to $21/hour.

Lowest got $2, the next lowest range got 1.25, the next level got .75.

15 vs 17 vs 21 before ended up being 17 vs 18.25 vs 21.75.
