Maybe I am wrong and thinking too much like a company.

If I run a company and I came up through accounting... I'm not going to hire an expensive accounting director.. because I can keep an eye on it myself.

I'll hire and pay more to departments that I don't know as much about.

That is my only thought here. Geez, you guys live in your feelings and shout down everything thought that you don't agree with...

I don't see anyone shouting you down, just engaging in "Honest Discussion about Nielsen".

I would if I think he is the best fit available... in a perfect world I get your point but it comes down to picking the guy you feel is best.

Based on what your saying, O should limit himself to a DC who specializes in LB or Safety.. not being argumentative but I don't think this is how it should be handled.

No, this does make sense. But you’re company’s departments are likely a lot more separated than football positions and their respective coaches. Accounting and HR aren’t all in the same meetings all day.

If O and Neilson haven’t picked up enough of all positions after 25-30+ years of full defensive meetings and practices run by DCs and daily working side-by-side with their position coach peers, then they’re likely not qualified to be HC or DC (which may help explain why Raymond is still a DB coach). M

But also, your logic makes more sense when just dealing with the side of the ball the HC has a background in. If they have a defensive background, you can’t “cover” all the positions with your OC’s specialty.

But I do think a lot of HCs probably would prefer to hire to their weaknesses in a perfect world (though I do think this does take a humility and self-awareness that not all coaches possess), but not at the expense of hiring the best guy. It may be a tie-breaker in the end, but you can’t disqualify 1/3 of the candidates in the beginning. IMHO, of course.

I think the opposite of you. Having a dc who is your dl coach along with orgeron and a good grad asst like lacouture I think is helpful. The dc has more responsibility then just his position coaching and this will free him up a little to work with the other coaches and prepare his defense. We hire a great lber coach and a good safety coach and I think we come out ahead.
