Seems like a good candidate who should be gettable.

Texas D wasn’t great last year at 64th in yards per game but that was an improvement from 89th the season before, despite him coming in as a new DC with all the COVID craziness. And Tom Herman suuucks.

Was DC at Arkansas with Bielema so knows the SEC. Before that was DC at Wisconsin.

After Arkansas he was hired by Urban as co-DC at Ohio State. Then got HC gig at Rutgers and flamed out (but who cares).

ETA: Also, his base defense is a 4-2-5 or 4-3 which is what O supposedly wants (and probably best fits our personnel)

He seems like a great hire. I wouldn't be mad at all.

I'm guessing it may be tough for O to hire a DC that is unemployed, and had a failed HC stint. Maybe too many similarities to Pelini.

I would be more than fine with it and surprised he wasn’t retained

Are like belly buttons...

No seriously, I’ll allow it. I think he’d be a solid hire. I like 4-2-5 OR 4-3, bc that tells me if he’s good running either he’d be game to throw in 3-4 some also...or be multiple...which I’m told is what u HAVE to be to have a prayer against RPO offenses.

He’s good.

If he and Pittman would have stayed with Bielema Bert would probably still be at Ark.

Considering whose left, I think he’d be a take at this point.

He would be a very solid hire. Texas fans seem to like him and what he did in his first year. I'm not sure why he seemingly isn't being retained, and it is very surprising and odd he hasn't gotten more airtime as a candidate.

Sark probably just wants to bring in his own guy. I get that. It doesn’t diminish the fact that Ash did a good job improving Texas’ defense this season.

The fact that he’s in limbo is one reason he’s been under the radar. He isn’t going to leave Texas to come here if they still want him, so he’s not stepping aside until they make a decision one way or another. I doubt we would bother unless and until he’s cut loose.

Since he runs a 4-2-5 base, has a solid track record and is a good recruiter, Ash should definitely be considered if Nielsen doesn’t pan out. As slowly as things are moving with Texas, he may still be on the market if that were to happen.

Would be a good hire, but we’ve waited this long, I kinda want to see what O has up his sleeve.

He was interviewing with florida for their open safeties position.

Why not interview him for the same position here. You could also get an idea of him as a dc in case nielsen doesn't pan out

Does he not collect a buyout if he sits on the sidelines for a year? Wouldn't taking a position coach job drastically reduce his paycheck then?

Eta: looks like he had a 2-yr deal for $800k/yr when he joined UT staff a year ago.

He may not have many options this year. There are far fewer schools than normal coach shopping right now because of COVID budget shortfalls. There may not be a DC job left they pays that well when things shake out at UT. He may have to settle for a position coach gig and then move back up in a year when more positions are open.

I agree with Chalky that it would be smart for LSU to quietly interview him for the Safety coach position now.
