Heisman precedent tends to be that it is a Lifetime Achievement Award for a good player rather than the best player that season.
Billy Cannon, for example, didn’t play nearly as well the season he won as the year previous when LSU won a title but John David Crow took home the Heisman.
Herschel Walker also got fricked on the Heisman early in his college career by not getting it while putting up record numbers. He finally got it as a Junior.
Am I saying Lawrence should have won it over Devonta? No. But the Heisman voters have a history of going with longevity over single season achievements.

Your decades old examples don't really jive with their more recent votes.
The most recent one you could say resembled a career achievement award was Smith in 2007.

Then explain Tebow winning it as a Sophomore in 2007. The next year he is in the BCS Championship game at 12-1 but loses it to, yet another Sophomore, Sam Bradford. 2009 was Ingram as a Sophomore. Manziel was a RS Freshman in 2012, as well as Jameis in 2013. Maybe it used to be that way, but over the last 10-15 years it has become a best individual season, or best player on best team award.

Back then, they would never give it to an underclassman. I think Tebow was the first.
