You never NEED it, but having a little weight isn't a bad thing if you aren't backpacking the rifle in. I dont think 9 pounds should be a point of concern for most people.

9lbs isn’t that big a deal, it’s more that this rifle could weigh much less, they just chose for it not to so it would make pretty holes in paper. Not just about ounces, being sold on the premise of being a modern brush gun means it would need to be balanced, almost above all else.
