Unfortunately New Orleans is a city that relies on visitors for it’s tax base so without that, the city cannot make ends meet. Latoya ought to be clamoring for tourist dollars but she’s fallen into the allure of disaster funding for city services.

She’d rather whine to the state and feds and get bailed out than actually try to make ends meet by running an efficient office

She has 8 assistants making over 150,000 a year!

People have been moving out but it hasn’t been felt yet. By June it will be noticeable

The decline in New York over the past 5-6 years will accelerate massively. But places like New Orleans and Las Vegas that are entirely dependent on tourism will be hit even worse.

NOLA’s short term future looks really bad.

I will get downvoted for this, but I think this may end up being a net positive for NOLA.

Of course, this is dependent upon the soul/heart of the city not being gutted.

But look at this board. How many threads to we have, where people post, I want to live in LA, but I can't find a job? I want to live in NOLA, but I can make more money in Houston?

A lot of people WANT to live here. If job attachment is no longer an issue, that number will increase.

People who buy condos as weekend/second homes, may just decide to live here full time.

Now, the tourism/F&B industry? It's in bad shape. It's going to depend on how long they can hang on. A lot of these businesses were living on the margins in the best of times. F&B is not known for being well-managed, financially, and you are seeing that.

But people haven't forgotten how to cook, how to make a drink, how to play the drums. When this is over, there will be demand for them. You might see more out of town ownership, more corporate ownership.

But in the tourism / F&B industry, NOLA is a brand that sells. No one is going to put a McD in the marigny. Stop that.

As a current NOLA resident and long-time former Chicago resident, we have it better here. Chicago is in far worse shape both short term, as a result of Covid and civil unrest, and long term, as a result of corruption and financial mismanagement.

I go back occasionally for work and things are seriously f***ed up there. I have a semblance of a normal life here, they do not in Chicago.

I think no having Mardi Gras this year will be impossible for the city to overcome the lack of revenue across all channels.

Bullish on tourism returning slowly starting this summer, but Orleans Parish cannot get out of it's own way in terms of diversifying its economy. No doubt about that.

I'm looking at houses outside of the parish too, as many friends are or have already done and acted on.
