Tom Herman's dubious claim to fame. The 2014 Ohio State Natty? Not so fast

Herman got out of Cardale Jones way. That's about it.
Jones didn't run the Meyer/Herman Zone Read Option. No one had much hope they could avoid a blowout by Wisconsin. Cardale reverted to the offense he knew, and long-bombed Wisky. And he gave the ball to Zeke Elliot, and Cardale steam-rolled LBs and DBs when plays broke down. Cardale knocked off, Wisky, Bama, then Oregon. Won the Natty.
Cardale ran his pro-style offense. Not some genius O from Herman.
The next season, instead of running Cardale's crude but highly effective backyard pro-style O, Meyer forced him to run the Read/Option. Square peg, round hole. Cardale, was till undefeated as a starting QB, but didn't take to the R/O and so he was replaced by JT.
So, just as Malzahn flipped the keys to Newton to win a Natty, Herman flipped them to Cardale in'14.
Herman=Malzahn They got out of the way.

Malzahn went back to another BCS game as coach and had beaten bama what 3 or 4 times while there (way more than we did in same time span).

LSU would've been better off with him than Coach Owe

If you want to step back in time a decade or so, hire Herman or Malzahn.

I mean how fing dumb are you? Herman wasn't even on the staff in 2015.

I literally laughed out loud when I got to that part.

Yup. Brain-farted on that one.
Doesn't change the fact that Herman's O didn't win the 14 Natty.
That was Cardale running his own version of a Pro-style offense.

Herman called the 2014 offense and was the QB coach.
The offensive output he called in that final 3 game stretch, combined with the performance of his 3rd string QB, certainly beg to differ.

many QBs run the zone read option play. see burrow and how good he was at it.
CUM ran a power/smashmouth spread offense at OSU which did have power reads as a staple of his offense. I am sure he ran zone reads also though within that offense.

Cardale did it his way. By using the WR's that Herman ignored on the long ball all season, and by slobberkocking DBs and LBs when plays broke down. And giving the ball to Zeke every chance he got.
Herman certainly stepped up and took credit. Rode that myth into a HC career.

Yeah, I bet Herman just sat there twiddling his thumbs during the 2014 playoffs while Cardale ran his own offense.

I’m no Tom Herman fan or apologist, but what he did in 2014 was damn impressive.
Basically had the offense designed around Braxton Miller, then ran through the season (sans Va. Tech) with a backup quarterback, and then won the Big Ten CG and the CFP - including beating Bama - with a third stringer.

You think Herman taught Cardale how to bulldoze D's for countless 3rd down conversions - mostly busted plays. Or how to flick 70 yard high arching (easy to catch) long balls?
And Cardale's long passes took the top of the D's. Zeke averaged 235 yards rushing in those 3 2014 games with Cardale - less than 100 in the other 12 games.

Zone Read Spread Option is what Meyer called it in a press conference.
Meyer said to a reporter, "If you have to give it a name, I'd call it a Zone Read Spread Option". Good enough for me.

If you want about a 4 loss HC, Malzahn or Herman are the way to go.
And they both rode in as OCs on QBs that did it their own way.

As far as I'm concerned, his claim is that he was the Iowa state oc that beat okie state which put bama in the rematch game against LSU which eventually got Les fired.
