How worried should we be about our Linebacker corps?

A friend of mine, who goes to a rival SEC school which shall go unnamed, says that our LB corps is the mushy cream-filled middle of our defense and that teams will abuse us on short 5-10 yard passes up the middle.

What say you?

Beckwith is solid. Riley and Sheppard are incredibly talented but not tested. Clemons and Cutrera are good backups. Linebacker will not be the strength of the defense, but they will be good and improve as the season moves along.

I think the starting 3 will in no way be a liability on defense. And we will play nickel and dime ALOT. so the main thing is depth. if anyone is injured for a significant amount of time, the position could become a weakness.

Saban hardly ever had more than 2 solid Lb's at a time. We only lost one playmaker at LB last year. We will be ok at Linebacker as long as our Co-DC's don't blow it now that Pelini isn't around. Our Safeties are basically Linebackers anyway and they will be used that way this year again.*Mccray, Coleman, Taylor, Jones, and possibly Hatcher

So what school are you really a fan of? Because it's clearly not LSU.

A linebackers best friend is the defensive line and we have one of the best, if not the best, in the NCAA (might be better than a few pro teams).

Beckwith is an All-SEC/2nd Team All-American LBer and is very solid. Riley & Shep are talented, but not experienced. I think Clemmons will be very good. Cutrera and R. Baker are also talented freshman who will provide good depth.

No worries.

If he's talking about last year he is absolutely 100% correct, except that it's not the players who were to blame, but the coaches.

Beckwith is going to be one of the best LB's in the nation. Riley & Shepard will be solid and develop into top LB's in the next few years.

I just recently learned that Riley & Sheppard played HS ball together. Somehow, I think that chemistry will really help them come along.

No they aren't, but I think "you're totally ignorant" would qualify.

Linebacker was the most overrated position on our defense last year. They were constantly running themselves out of plays, running into blockers, and causing huge plays for the other team.

I think we'll be fine.

I think Highsmith did a damn good job last year. IMO.

I posted a thread on this exact thing few weeks back. I think they will be our Achilles heal this year. Hope I'm wrong but we will see..

Perry Riley is an upgrade over Ali Highsmith. Kid has crazy wheels and is a big hitter.

Beckwith is going to play himself into the first 4 rounds of the NFL draft.

Shepperd, Cut, Clemons may have more pure talent than Sanders, but I haven't seen enough of either of them to make a realistic comparison. I would think that at the miminum we upgrade athleticism at the position.

Whoa. Care to substantiate that one?
