My Guitar Hero Passed Away on Christmas

Lot of you may not have heard of him but his name was Tony Rice. Just about any bluegrass or country picker grabbed some of his licks. I tried to as well and tried my best to least play rhythm like him. He was a strong as rhythm player too and you can hear it in music now.
He had the Holy Grail Martin D-28 guitar that was once owned by Clarence White. He had a smooth baritone voice until nerve problems caused his voice to be scratchy and I believe he retired around 2015 and said he’d stay that way until he felt arthritis would let him do it again.
Every time he talked it sounded that way until he accepted his plaque for the Hall of Fame. He had worked on some exercises to try to speak regularly for a moment and he did but never sang again.
Tony Rice Acceptance Speech
Thank you sir for the music and the inspiration.

Damn, I didn't know that. I'm a big fan of his. Hell of a picker.

I’m not sure what happened but it sounds like a stroke or heart attack. All I’ve heard is he was making his and Pam’s morning coffee and was gone in an instant.

Legendary talent - consummate musician - David Grisman Quartet - E.M.D.
Sad thought to know he'll never play this live again.... Blackberry Blossom - Tony and Norman
of course if there's guitars in the great hereafter - Clarence White and Tony Rice - might be doing this again.
This guy has made me put down my guitar in disgust (oh) so many times.

Watched him and Grisman recreate their 'Tone Poems' LP live at Merle Fest and it's was nothing but non-stop wow after wow. (eta: must have seen him live 8-9 times)
Once met him when a good friend who did a festival called the 'Acousitc Cafe' had him and Norman together. Didn't get to trade tales just a couple howdies and how you do's because the crowd wouldn't allow him to interact without stifling the conversation. Every body wanted to meet him. Most everyone else maybe Doc you could approach, not that they/he ran, but their star power eclipsed the normal interaction you could have with others.

Are you talking about Steve Masterson with the Acoustic Cafe?

I had met him a few times. We had talked to him a bit about playing down there till some of the band members started getting wishy washy and wouldn’t come to practice

Saw this earlier today. He was a master of his trade.

Damn, another great one gone. One of the best to ever pick an acoustic guitar and had a unique singing style.
Hills of Roane County ... one of my favorite Tony Rice songs.

You can throw that D-28 CW large soundhole my way if you're still mad at it.
