I think the most gut-wrenching thing I've ever seen happen to them prior to some of our previous playoff exits was the hail Mary that Tim couch threw against us in 1999.
I went to that game with my step dad. He doesn't even like the Saints and always ribs me about them but even on that day he wasn't a dick.

If he catches it, the Saints win the game and make the playoffs for the first time ever. Poe is playing deep center late, and watching the pass come, you almost think he could call fair catch, he's all alone and doesn't have to even move. He watches it the whole way in, and... it bounces off his chest.
Next play, big completion puts Rams into game winning FG position. Saints out, Cowboys in as the last playoff team. Wasn't a long kick, 42 yds, and it wasn't down the middle- it went right at the upright, but slid inside. Last game of the season, you have a whole off-season of sickened, bitter hatred at the cruelty of it all, and frick the Cowboys and Rams. I was 15, and I don't think I ever cried such tears of utter hatred about life itself, like I did that moment
I mean, it was THERE. RIGHT THERE. And then, it was gone.
