Unless you’re a top 5 player, you don’t deserve the Max

It is a death sentence for any franchise

No it’s not

Name all these teams who are currently “death sentenced” from giving a max contract out

Yeah there's a good bit more than 5 players with the max. The problem is if you have 1 or 2 maxed players and no future capital. Clippers don't have many draft picks to build on so if shite hits the fan it could be pretty bad for them.

The way the revenue share works, and how the cap works and how easily trades can be worked out and how there’s always bad shitty GMs in the league, it’s pretty much impossible to frick up your franchise with 1

Even the leagues worst contracts have been traded for positive assets in the last few years. Wiggins, Horford, Chris Paul (twice), Westbrook (twice), John Wall now etc all got traded with disastrous contracts for one reason or another

It’s not much of a death sentence if you can get out of it at pretty much any time you want, although you may not get a ton of value for it.

If Carson Wentz was an NBA player he’d be getting traded for 4 future 1st rounders right now

I think maxing the wrong guy is way worse. You can ditch almost any contract after 3 years in the nfl

The clippers, or who ever, will be paying PG 38 million at age 36

Disagree.

What they need to to do is adjust the way a max contract affects luxury tax. Drafting and developing a superstar should be a reward not a detriment, which it becomes once the max is signed (for a lot of players).

If you sign your own player to a max deal they should figure out a way that the salary doesn’t count towards the luxury tax or reduce the amount it counts.

Or you could have a max amnesty clause. A team could use it once every 10-15 years.

Opposite.

Hard cap with no exceptions, but no max contracts either.

If they stay with the soft cap and exceptions and max contracts, I agree with this approach.

Maybe have it count for cap purposes but not lux tax purposes or something, but only for players that you drafted.

But people view contracts differently in the NBA. Due to salary matching large contracts like this could be viewed as an asset depending on the team and situation. See how the wolves were able to trade Wiggins. No ream in the NFL could do that

Those 3 years in the NFL makes it nearly impossible to fill out a competitive roster because you have taken away a huge amount of cap space and have no ability to move away from the asset while still needed to fill out a 53 man roster

The clippers could trade PG at any time and get positive value out of it and get the contract off the books. In the NFL depending on the contract structure, if you trade or cut that player he’s still lingering on your cap and hurting your ability to field a competitive team

And? If he’s still half decent he’s a solid expiring contract asset to use or will get you into playoff contention, if he’s complete trash or not playing it’s simply helping you tank to have a better ability to have a shot at another elite player in the draft.

Some team with no talent on their roster will be happy to pay 38 mil to PG. we literally just saw Westbrook and wall get traded which are way worse contracts than George’s could possibly be.

There’s so many unique and different paths to making trades and money work in the NBA because their system is a lot simpler than the NFLs contract system. Good luck making a 3 team trade happen, goodell shits his pants from an NFL team trying anything different in trades.

You’re just flat out incorrect about this
