You don't need a cannon to kill an Elk. Most guys think you need a 300 to kill hill country whitetail. My son shot a bull last week with a my 7 mag. 150 yard shot. 150 grain bullet. The Elk had a softball side hole on the off side. I recently had a custom 300wm built for Elk hunting in the mountains. Before glass the gun weighed 6.5 lbs. She kicks like a mule but I've never felt recoil when shooting an animal.

Unless you just want an excuse to buy a new rifle the 308 will kill anything you shoot at..
