This is why I'm afraid of getting a dog. I just can't handle the heartbreak when they finally leave this world.

Not going to lie it hurts but the joy & memories they give you far outweighs the grief

My dog died on Labor day. I still think about him every day and tear up occasionally. It's terrible.

As someone who just put his dog down within the past 24 hours, it is 1000% worth it. Do your research and make sure don't get a big breed with a really short life span like a Great Dane unless you are able to accept that they will likely only be around for 9 or so years.

But if you acknowledge that it will happen, do your best to keep them happy and healthy, and have a solid plan for when the end comes where they won't be suffering and you will be good. Its definitely sad and their time with you isn't ever enough, but that shouldn't be the reason you don't get a dog if you truly want one.

I'm gonna wait a few months and then will definitely be stopping by the humane society to get another one.
