It ended as I always thought it would. One brother dying in the line of duty and the other walking away from the hunter's life and living a "normal" life. I enjoyed the ending.
Agree, Dean was never going to settle down, he always knew he would die hunting. Sam had the opportunity to raise a family, which was what he always wanted, but as his son’s tattoo showed, he didn’t stop hunting. I wasn’t thrilled with how Dean died, but the last 20 minutes brought things home nicely.

The only thing that really surprised me about the ending was the finality of it. Both actors have said they'd be open to doing a short season of the show on a streaming service in the future if the opportunity arises. I know it's Supernatural and they could make it happen, but it seems like they really closed the door on that by showing you Sam living out his days. Still, I thought the show,
despite covid restrictions, gave us a nice wrapped up ending. From the pilot episode, it was clear Dean always embraced the hunter's life and would likely meet his demise at the hand of a monster, while Sam was more eager to live a normal life, but was pulled into the life out of commitment to family and finding his GF's killer. Glad Sam got the life he wanted after all. Although, with the tattoo on his son's arm, it's likely he continued to hunt in some capacity.
I would have loved to see how it would have ended if there were no covid restrictions.
