Reasons to hold off on Finley for now

Look the kid played with extreme confidence and played a fantastic game for a true freshman. But there are still tons of things I’d like to see from him.
1. The way he reacts when the pocket collapses.
Let’s be honest South Carolina hardly ever brought pressure which is extremely surprising. Very poor defensive game plan imo. Finley was able to stand back there all night without even being touched. Steele will dial it up this week and we will see how he reacts.
2. Ability to pick up a blitz and check in out of plays.
Play calling was very vanilla in terms of the passing scheme. Finley wasn’t asked to do too much, it was mostly 2 step drops and getting the ball out quickly!
Let’s see what happens when more is asked from him when running the offense. Again Steele is a really good coordinator and there will be plenty of disguising and trying to confuse him this week. I believe South Carolina just didn’t trust this kids accuracy very much and prolly felt the secondary could hold up enough. There’s now tape out there, and I don’t expect this to be a game plan from many defenses from now on.
3. Will the offensive line play stay consistent?
The run blocking was phenomenal and the ability to be balanced helped Finley out a lot. If the run game wasn’t there like it’s been for Myles does he still have this good of a game? Also yes the pass blocking was good but like I said I’m very surprised South Carolina didn’t try to create pressure. If the offensive line can play like this every week this can be one of the best units in the SEC besides the team in Tuscaloosa and I really don’t think it matters who u put under center.
In conclusion, every LSU fan should be extremely excited to how much better and modernized the current scheme is. Light years from where we were and it’s a QB friendly offense

why didn't the coaches call these plays in the 1st three games?

Believe we have seen a lot of that. Which it’s worked, but once a defense starts playing press man, it doesn’t as much. You have to be able to switch it up some.

Worth noting that 1, 2, and 3 are interdependent.
If WRs do their job (and QB trusts them- i.e. chemistry), you should be getting the ball out quickly in this offense. If you get the ball out quickly the OL always, always, looks better. The end result is the QB rarely faces a collapsing pocket; you have blitzes, but that takes me back to the WRs and a QB knowing what to do- quickly.
The most [pleasantly] suprising thing Sat. was the trust in the WRs by TJ. He didn't overthink it and knew where they were supposed to be- and trusted them to be there, and they did their jobs well. Worth noting that's why we saw Marshall in the slot so much, that was TJ's safety blanket.
Take Rick's pick-6. Ricks had inside leverage and the WR had a choice to make- either fight to the inside and cross Rick's face OR make a read on that leverage and abandon the slant. He did neither.
In our offense likely that's a read that both the QB and WR make and the slant is off and the route goes outside with the outside guy now breaking in in response. That's chemistry.
Or, Marshall being experienced he sticks with it and pushes the DB back and then crosses his face and TJ has trust in him to do that.
SCAR obviously doesn't have the same read based WR routes like we do, so the route stood as called (like we used to do). And then the WR didn't do his job. Pick 6.
The idea that TJ stepped in and was able to avoid such things and actually turn them into gains was very impressive for game 1 and a freshman.

I agree And I think Those things are why he would take Brennan’s job.
BUT we can all get excited for him. He looked awesome

you act like our offense looked bad in those games

They coaches literally forgot how to call a running play VS Missouri.

we are talking about pass plays.

My point was that it’s not the passing playcalls that changed.

Brennan is our guy. I can definitely see the benefit of putting in packages specifically for him similar to what we did with periloux in 07 and what Florida did with Tebow and Leak in 06

9/39 on third down isn't great. myles made some NFL throws but struggled in the short passing game badly.

I figured with a fresh qb we would try to establish the run...still perplexed by the Mizzou gameplan. Oline looked great.

It’s definitely a combination of a Freshman QB and a reaction to completely flipping in the run game last week.
People can say it was a shootout, but we also had the lead late in the game and couldn’t/wouldn’t try and run the ball.

Why on earth would you blitz more if the team is doing what you said in the bottom quote?

I was excited that he was actually able to feel pressure, roll out, and make something happen. Let's be honest, if the O line brings their roller skates, it won't matter either way.

I think part of the problem was we never tried establishing the run or definitely gave up on it too early. Mizz was short 3 interior dlinemen also.

Not every pass was a 2 step drop. So I agree probably best to not blitz in those instances. But you still have to take ur chances sometimes as a DC. Especially considering how comfortable he looked all game

Mizzou and state continued to load the box. We took what the defense was giving us!!! But yes still should’ve been more run mixed in

Do you believe 0/30 were because of the play-calling?
