Help running audio from a projector to a surround sound system

Here is the setup.
FireTV—->5.1Channel Audio Extractor——>1)HDMI Out to Projector 2) Audio (red/white) out to A/V receiver.
I can’t get the audio to come out of the speakers connected A/V receiver. It keeps looking for a DVD, USB etc. I have a good set of speakers - do I need something other than an AV receiver to push the audio out to the speakers?
Video on the projector is fine and have audio from the projector itself.

Swap the receiver and projector in the chain.

Why wouldn’t you have your fire stick plugged into your receiver?
On mine the Apple TV is plugged into the receiver.

All inputs should go to receiver. Only thing on the projector should be the Video out from the Receiver.

You can't carry 5.1 sound over 2 analog wires. You need one wire per channel.
What AVR do you have? Does it have HDMI? Which input did you plug the audio in wires into, and do you mistakenly have an HDMI on that same channeL OR a setting within the AVR to look for analog instead of digital sources?
You probably don't own an AVR that allows for analog surround-sound in unless you bought it for that purpose.

I don't know what equipment you have but confused why you're using the extractor. Why not run it thru the A/V receiver and let that split your audio and video?

The AVR is an older model and doesn’t have an HDMI in. The only video in it has is S Video or yellow input. It does have an HDMI out though.
I’m just looking for the best way to get sound out of the projector and into some better audio.
Is there an audio source that would accept red/white inputs that would produce enough sound for a back yard movie/football? I don’t think this AVR is going to work.

I have my firestick plugged into a Blackbird audio extractor. HDMI out to projector and optical audio out to receiver. It works fine.
Are you sure the receiver is working or setup properly? Plug something else that you know works into that particular channel with the same cable AND/OR plug the extractor into a different receiver to see if that helps isolate the problem.
As mentioned if your only option is 1 pair of red/white connectors (RCA connectors) you won't get better than stereo sound, but you should still get some sound.

Yamaha is just rolling out two new AV receivers which have huge bang for the buck, the RX-V4A ($439.00) and the RX-V6A ($599.00). But the real bang for the buck is a Costco only version of the RX-V6A, which is labeled as the TSR-700 (identical specs and look to the RX-V6A) which, if it appears at your local Costco (not online) is reportedly selling at $399.00.
EDIT: I went to Costco in Lafayette last night and picked up a TSR-700 for $399.00. It's a really good piece of hardware. Replaced my beast Yamaha RX-A1000 which burned out right before Hurricane Delta. The TSR-700 pushes plenty of power in prime surround and in my zone 2 (the pool).
