Forgive my ignorance on this but I was at a gun store and asked the guy behind the counter what made the 6.5 a popular caliber. He said straight up “the concept of the 6.5 rifle is to give you the stopping power of an AK47 with the accuracy of the AR15”. Now was this guy talking out of his arse or was there some truth to this?

That doesn’t sound like it at all. The concept is supposed to be high ballistic coefficient and low recoil at a medium velocity.

If he was talking about the 6.5 creedmoor, he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

If he was talking about the 6.5 Grendel, then it's a better answer.
