Sciatica pain management

Has anyone had sciatica and how have you managed the pain? I have had some flare ups and am trying to get over it. What have you all done in the past to help prevent it in the future as far as altering workouts or adding in prehab or rehab routines?

Suffered from it for years. Besides certain medical care , yoga and Pilates has helped tremendously. A strong core, balance and flexibility will help. My Pilates instructor is also an experienced PT so there’s a focus on those things. I’ll also add that a strong core is a lot more than doing sit ups. May want to find a good PT for a few sessions to learn some stretches and core exercises.
Good luck
Good luck

Was thinking yoga or Pilates might be beneficial when I get through this. Thanks!

Th best thing that’s helped for me is a leg pillow when sleeping

Injections from pain management was the only relief for me.

Mine ended up being my piriformis muscle. Less than 5 dry needling sessions and I’ve been good for years. PT said that it’s rare he sees actual sciatica and that most of the time it’s what I had. Good luck.

quote:Agreed. It's almost none of that. Work on your quads, hammies and glutes.

My dad had the radio frequency ablation. It's only supposed to last 9-18 months but he's gone more than two years without a recurrence.

What does dry needling actual do?

I’m in the same boat currently. I’ve had two back surgeries already for ruptured discs that got really bad (severe nerve damage, etc). Now I have another small extrusion that is pressing on my nerve. Doing PT now because injections didn’t work (too much scar tissue). Basically trial and error at this point to avoid another procedure.
What type of core exercises do y’all do?

I've had a moderately herniated disc and other various back problems before. Everyone has a different experience, but what helped me the most was walking a lot and getting stronger overall. I also try to accumulate a few minutes of a deep squat every day. If any movement hurts, then stop that movement. If the movement feels good, then it's probably ok.

I do stretches for my lower back, butt and hamstrings every time I am at the gym. They work wonders for it.

The dry needling gets the muscle to release. Depending on the severity of seizure, they may electronically stimulate the needle while it’s in the muscle.

I tried everything but had footdrop, atrophy in calf muscle. Ended up having back surgery as a last resort. Micro discsectomy.
Doesn’t work for everyone but it helped me. 95% better with relatively few nerve issues every now and then. Strength was back immediately.
Some of the beat things I tried pre surgery were dry needling, yoga, Murphy method chiropractic stretches.
Sciatica is no fun. Hope you work through it!
