I think most people don't realize that this is Jrue's last year under contract. He has a player option for 2022, and i see no reason why he would play under it at his age if he knows he can get another 4 year deal done.
That fact also lessens his trade value. Teams that would trade for him have to feel confident they can resign him, or else he's just a 1 year rental. Would you give up the #2 pick and a top 10 pick next year for a 1 year rental? would you give up Jaylen Brown for a 1 year rental? Would you give up Herro/Robinson for a 1 year rental? This isn't a 1 year rental of Kawhi, it's Jrue.

I mean Jrue isn't Kawhi or AD in a egotistical type of way. He was traded to a shity pelicans team and has made the absolute best out of it. I don't think he wouldn't sign a deal with Miami, Boston, etc.. The real question is would he take a pay cut to come back here? Yeah we can make a deal with those teams and have an agreed upon extension for Jrue, but what if he will take a 4/80 or less from us and help build our squad. He's just not the guy that is trying to screw anyone over so I think we take our time and look at the best decision for all parties.

MM has brought up Jrue extensions multiple times this summer I assume for this reason. If he says no then that tells you it's probably time to trade him.

With the uncertainty of the cap and league finances he might want to lock in more guaranteed money/years with an extension. He's made that choice before. Jrue's 2nd contract was considered a good deal because a lockout was looming so Jrue and other players like Steph Curry took the guaranteed money on what ended up being team friendly deals once the lockout ended.
