cgrand,

I have an rv rented next week and we were going to the Ozarks, but now it looks to cold. Thinking of switching to big bend, could we drive all these roads in a small rental rv?

Not Cgrand, but I've been there a few times. The only road you might have trouble with is the one that goes into the Chisos basin. It has max length limits for RVs and Trailers. I don't remember off the top of my head what they are, but It should be posted on the park website. Everything else will be fine.

Taking family deer hunting in between Sheffield and Sanderson for Thanksgiving week. Will have 8 days total. Thinking of hunting 3 and using other 5 to explore big bend. Sounds like Marfa, Hot Springs and Pinto Canyon are can’t miss stops. Any ideas if this trip would be doable? Driving from Baton Rouge. Any other stops I should make part of the trip? 10 and 5 year old boys. We just made 12 day trip flying into Denver and going to Grand Canyon most of the Utah parks, RMNP back to Denver. Boys loved it so driving long distance not a problem with my crew. Thanks

forget marfa, go straight to the park (or first stop at chinati hot springs if you can get a reservation). get an AirBNB or cabin in terlingua and spend you days inside big bend

Except for pinto canyon Rd to chinati hot springs. If you still want to go to the hot springs you can come at it from the Ruidosa end. It's a gravel Rd but we'll maintained and no steep grades. Get reservations at the Hot Springs as they only have about 8 rooms and don't allow day use.

Marfa is not for people that don't like art. But most everything is shut down right now so unless you just want to use it as a base for day trips to the Nat. Park, State Park, etc, it's not the best time to go.

Another great off road drive I just heard about on my last trip out there but haven't done yet is the 27 mile off road drive to Sauceda Ranger Station in the state park. You can spend the night at the station.

We camped in BBRSP for 4 nights over thanksgiving. Our campsite was Pila Montoya 2 which was about 8-9 miles past the ranger station. Just to set your expectations - you're not really off-roading to get to the ranger station. Its just a really long wash-boarded dirt road. A sedan can do it (though I wouldn't). Now, once you get off the main (dirt) road things can get serious in a hurry.

While we were there they shut the Sauceda station down after someone got covid. Not sure what the status was of the people in the bunkhouse.

It is certainly remote and scenic and I'm sure we'll be back. Cinco Tenajas was a great hike.

Also - the main park road does not go all the way through the park to Lajitas or anywhere else for that matter. Had some poor fricker stop me to ask for directions. He had probably gone 3 hours the wrong way at that point with another 3-4 ahead of him to complete what should have been a 1 hour drive if he didn't try to get cute. He had kids and dogs and I could see the anger in his wife's eyes as I explained how fricked he was. Point being - google will pick up old roads that aren't open and trails and whatnot as roads in that area. You need a real, paper map for this area that shows locked park gates and distinguishes "road traces" from 4wd roads. These can be downloaded here for planning and picked up at any of the ranger stations for BBRSP

Gotcha. The guy I talked to at chinati hot springs said it wasn't as steep as pinto canyon road but he didn't go into much detail. He said the area around the ranger station was nice and very remote.

He's not kidding about remote. We had no cell service from about a mile from the highway on. Our nearest neighbors while camping were about a mile off and they were very close compared to the next closest. I'm not much of a photographer but here's a couple shots from our camp.

Hey Cgrand,

Have you seen Fandango? It was Costner’s first movie and it is about college kids road tripping through that area. Sounds like you were at many key places mentioned in the movie. People from all over meet and make that drive to honor the movie. We have family members that have done it.

Yea, it's hard to take a bad picture anywhere in that region.

pinto canyon road really isn’t that bad.
there’s a few stretches where it’s narrow and or on a ledge but the road itself is fine, well maintained

there was never a point where I had to put it in 4WD and assuming the weather is good it’s easy enough for just about any vehicle with reasonable ground clearance. It’s worth the drive

Big Bend is my favorite National Park and I love Alpine Texas.

I don't think any readers would enjoy it though so stay away.

I live in Alpine, not retired. We have Big Bend Regional Hospital in Alpine which serves Brewster, Presidio and Jeff Davis counties.

There you are. We were down there at Thanksgiving but didn't get to Harry's. We did hike up the hill behind sul Ross and find the Steelcase desk the kids hauled up there.
