I really don't understand the appeal of these other than to say you have a Rolex

Consider a hobby or an interest you might have. Then think of one model that has been the quintessential version of that item for roughly 70 years with a consistent evolutionary design that kept it as best in class basically that entire time. That is what the Sub is. A near-perfect analog is the Porsche 911. If you bought a 911 30 years ago and kept it it is cooler and worth more than you paid just like a Sub. We will forget the 996 ever happened.

Are there better watches than a Rolex, absolutely. However, they make a watch that you can wear 24/7 until the day you die whether you work in an office or you repair diesel marine engines (there is a story there, some may be familiar with it). Mechanical watches are a niche and ones that are the price of a Rolex are even a smaller niche. I wouldn't buy a Holland & Holland, Fabri, Greener or Purdey but I can understand why a man would if he appreciated the quality. I am just fine with a Bianchi. Someome else might be happy with a Revelation his dad or grandfather bought at Western Auto back in the day.

I agree completely. As a watch enthusiast, you come to realize that even the slightest of changes in the Submariner--one of the most iconic watches of all time--is a really, really big deal. There's a reason the Sub is universally recognized. Every change it goes through adds to that 70-year history.

Even someone who doesn't get the appeal of watches should be able to see the value in that.
