Was it uncommon to see really obese people before ~ the late 1980s?
Childhood obesity began to grow in the 80's, but was still around 10% near the end of the decade. The explosion of fat people has mostly occurred in the past 25 years.

And coincided with the end of fat shaming. First time I ever saw the “fat is beautiful” bullshite was when Kamryn Mannheim was on “The Office”.
Ever since then the fat people are beautiful narrative has been pushed harder and harder. And the idea that you’re good just the way you are has been promulgated. But we all know that’s just not true. It’s an excuse.
