It was July 14, 2016, just four days before the Republican National Convention, and Donald Trump was still waffling on who to pick as his running mate.

He had just told Indiana Gov. Mike Pence he was his pick, but then, a day later, here he was calling up New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

“Are you ready?” he asked, as Christie recalled. “I want to know that you’re ready and that Mary Pat is ready.”

“If you want me to do this, we’re going to be ready,” Christie told him.

“Stay by the phone tomorrow, because I’m making this call tomorrow,” Trump said.

And what about former House Speaker Newt Gingrich? Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump liked Gingrich because he meshed well with Trump, performed well on TV and was a big thinker in a way Trump wasn’t. But Trump had told an adviser that Gingrich’s vetting packet was terrifying. The dirt Trump’s people had dug up on Gingrich “makes mine look tame,” Trump told the adviser.

I think that was true first term because Trump had no spiritual street cred. He's shown to be a great ally to Christians and Jews so he's earned some. Now Pence is a solid guy to be one heartbeat from the Presidency.

I will note that in my opinion Vice President Pence has done a great job and is actually a good fit.

Article says he wins the rust belt and evangelicals. Also hes on the board of governors which means he has pull in other states.

Thank god Chris Christy didn't get it. He locked up Kushners daddy and Jarred never forgot.

And it’s really what he’s good for. By no means is he capable of taking the #1 seat. Pence as a follow up to Trump wouldn’t work at all.

Pence is a GOPe lasso around Trump.

His job is to restrain Trump's worst impulses to the best of his power and then to provide cover for the continued looting of the American taxpayer by the political class.

We never hear about what projects Pence has going on in the White House, and I guarantee you that's because the GOPe has no issues with it.

Uh.... Mike Pence is not GOPe. They're not very fond of Evangelicals. They're the ones who've been pushing Republicans to ease up on abortion for the last 20 years.

Pence is a rock of stately stability. Trump is a raging bull tearing up the swamp. It makes a good combination.

I was hoping he would pick Paul or massie, I know there was no shot in hell. If he would have I would have voted for him and probably would this time.

Pence already has my vote for 2024. And Niki Haley in 2032.

Trump is almost single-handedly killing the Democratic Party.

Thanks to Kyle Rittenhouse for the push over the finish line.
